New Email List for Service-Related and Special Events Announcements
SCVC has just created a new email list to help keep interested local old students informed of various opportunities available at the center. To subscribe to this list, students can send an email to dhamma-service-announcements-subscribe@vaddhana.dhamma.org. This is an opt-in list, meaning that interested students need to subscribe themselves through a simple process. It is also opt-out in that students who do not wish to remain on the list can simply unsubscribe. SCVC is excited to have this additional way of sharing information with those who want to stay connected to the center.
Annual Trust Retreat March 4 - 6, 2022: Old Student’s Welcome
The Trust Retreat is a wonderful opportunity to spend time at the center with the Dhamma Vaddhana Trust and Assistant Teachers. The Trust serves an important function in guiding the administration of the center. During the retreat, participants can learn first-hand how this direction happens and perhaps decide to become more involved in serving on one of the many committees. Attendees participate in a tour of the campus to see the progress related to maintenance, landscaping, and development. They hear from the Trust committees on activities in which they have been engaged as well as on future planning. Everyone gets to participate in three daily group sittings with the Assistant Teachers. Registration opens February 4; please visit https://www.dhamma.org/en-US/schedules/schvaddhana to apply.
March Service Opportunities
Deep Cleaning Week: February 28 - March 4
The week before the Trust retreat is dedicated to deep cleaning and maintenance activities in accommodation and common spaces. This is an important time to complete challenging activities during the typical between-course service periods.
Gardens and Grounds Week: March 20 - 25
Projects include enhancing the overall beauty of the center: extensive weeding, shrubbery pruning, new plantings, and irrigation maintenance.
Those whose schedules allow may consider combining this with participation in the Trust Retreat. Part-time or full-time students are welcome to apply. https://www.dhamma.org/en-US/schedules/schvaddhana
Cactus and Desert Plant Donations
SCVC is always looking for native plants to enhance the overall beauty of the center. Sometimes, people have desert plants that they would like to remove and potentially donate. If you have plants that might be suitable for the Center landscape that need a new home, please contact manager@vaddhana.dhamma.org.
Long-Term Service
Serving for extended periods at the center is another crucial and important way to help and support activities at Dhamma Vaddhana. It is also very beneficial for those who choose to commit to serving at the center long term. Committing to stay and serve and sit continuously for a longer time helps students deeply strengthen their meditation practice while also learning to apply the practice in daily life. It is also a wonderful way to strengthen Sila by living in an atmosphere where the five precepts are always maintained. Typically, such students begin by sitting one course for every two to three courses served, and the length of service is determined in consultation with the center teachers and management. Students interested in long-term service may contact the Center Manager at manager@vaddhana.dhamma.org.
Seeking Between-Course Coordinators
Between-Course Coordinators serve a critical role in helping the Center Manager coordinate the activities of servers during the between-course service period. If you have experience serving at the SCVC, would like the opportunity to work with management in this way, and could commit to two or more between course periods each year, please reach out to the Dhamma Service Support Team at dhamma-service@vaddhana.dhamma.or.
SCVC Board of Trustees Meetings
The operations of SCVC are the responsibility of the Board of Directors (known as the Trust). The Trust is a group of committed serious old students who have been recommended to the position by the center teacher and previous Board of Directors. All decisions reached by the Trust are made so by consensus and in a completely open forum. Old students are welcome to attend and observe. If you want more information about the meeting agenda, please email registration@vaddhana.dhamma.org. Future dates will be available on the Course Information page.
